A group of lawmakers who belong to the National Assembly’s special committee on Dokdo will visit the islets today.
Rep. Won Yoo-chul, chairman of the committee, said they are scheduled to inspect the security facilities and a museum there.
“The purpose of our visit is to raise public awareness of a bill on the sustainable use of the islets, which is pending in the legislature,” Won said.
Won is the architect of the bill, aimed to secure financial support from the central and local governments to help civic groups campaign for Korea’s sovereignty over the islets at home and abroad.
“We are going see if all facilities and equipment there are working properly and listen to security forces guarding the islets regarding difficulties in fulfilling their missions,” Won said.
The lawmaker said that committee members would continue to make efforts to support campaign projects aimed at defending the sovereignty of Dokdo so as to help them proceed smoothly without budgetary constraints.
