A research institute dedicated to studies on the Dokdo islets has launched operations.
The East Sea Research Institute held its opening ceremony Thursday in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province.
The institute will conduct in-depth studies on the Dokdo islets and ocean resources in the East Sea.
It will also study ways to reduce natural disasters and develop maritime defense technology through research on climate change and marine surveys in the region.
Through its research activities, the state-run institute is expected to fortify Koreas territorial sovereignty over the Dokdo islets, which are also claimed by Japan.
